Listening. Including. Deciding. Acting. Reacting. Following. Learning. Reflecting. Growing. These words embody just a few traits that a leader must integrate not only in their work, but their lives. At LeaderShape, I learned the importance of using these traits through integrity and creating a vision to put these leadership traits into application. Through six days in West Harrison, Indiana surrounded by sixty other UC honors students, numerous staff, and two co-leads, I participated in several activities that demonstrated learning objectives. For instance, StarPower was a simulation depicting the dynamics of power and influence, which not only let me see just how quickly people can either work together or turn against each other, but also sparked discussion among students and staff alike for the rest of the evening. Earlier in the week, a group discussion was held discussing the importance of inclusive leadership and multicultural competence and humility. Smaller discussions were held too in family clusters. My family cluster provided a safe environment for discussion, consolation, compliments, constructive feedback, and friendship. Our diverse backgrounds and experiences provided unique insights on topics that definitely changed my way of thinking about empathy and the ways other people think. Finally, the gravity of personal reflection was emphasized during LeaderShape. After each activity and at the end of each day, I would reflect on my experiences both in my mind and on paper. I learned that as a leader, personal reflection is the only way to grow. Most importantly though, I realized that becoming an effective leader cannot be accomplished through a six day experience, but through many years of hard work, failure, and eventually success.
