In the fall of 2016, I completed my third semester as an undergraduate research assistant in the Lewkowich Lab at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. This semester, I continued my research project entitled "The Role of Epithelial Cells in the Allergic Asthma Immune Response" with my mentor, Dr. Jaclyn McAlees. At this point, I was very familiar with the lab environment and how a lab functions. I started to attend lab meetings, which usually consist of an update from each lab member on their research and what they are struggling with so that other members can give feedback on laboratory techniques or experimental design. I gained the experience of even presenting in lab meeting, which was nerve-wracking but beneficial. I started to also help perform basic lab duties such as defrosting the freezer, autoclaving containers, and cleaning lab benches and shelves. In November, I attended the Autumn Immunology Conference in Chicago, Illinois with other members of my lab. This was my first national conference, and it was definitely a great experience. I listened to a keynote speaker, attended some lectures about the newest immunology research, gave my first oral presentation, and gave my second poster presentation. It was fascinating to see all the immunology research happening across the nation involving people around the world. The picture below this reflection is me giving my oral presentation in front of principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and moderators. I am excited next semester to be starting a new project involving human patients, where I will be working in recruitment.
